“Moving about Mumbai’s chaotic streets with a 16mm Bolex camera strapped to your back is a great way to get to know a city and its locals” says Carlos Marquez Perez director of Apt Pupil Productions’ new Hindi drama “Jyoti”, starring Kanchi Singh and Mansi Dandiwala.
“It’s not hard to find inspiration when you find yourself in one of the most photogenic and magical cities in the world,” says Marquez Perez. “But when you’re working with a tenth of most western film budgets you can’t get too carried away. Ultimately, we had to find creative ways to cut corners and make the budget stretch so that the end product wouldn’t suffer”.
“It was incredible to see how much the crew accomplished with such little production time” says 1st AD/ Dialogue Coach Vikash Agarwal.
Director of Photography Alberto Castro thinks back to the shoot in Mumbai, “I loved it there. The people were so friendly and really approachable, everyone was eager to contribute. It was a great way to make a film”.
For eleven year old Kanchi Singh, playing the role of Jyoti was a unique experience. “It was fun- I got to jump on moving buses and sneak into government buildings,” says Singh. “The only thing I didn’t like about filming was that everything took so long” she adds with a grin.
“Through “Jyoti” I hope to share the Mumbai that I discovered. Contrary to its setting, this isn’t a ‘fast paced’ energetic movie, but more of an observation. I continue to find inspiration from the directors I admire; Abbas Kiarostami, Jafar Panahi and Gus Van Sant,” says Marquez Perez. “Making this film was an amazing experience but next time, I’m going to dig deeper and give Hindi musicals a go.” He winks.
